The Australian Democrat’s candidate for Ryan in the forthcoming election is Dr James (Jim) Page. Dr Page is an academic with Queensland University of Technology. He has taught widely in both Australia and overseas, and holds qualifications in humanities, education, divinity, educational anthropology and educational philosophy.
Dr Page is currently Australian co-ordinator for an international research project, examining social attitudes to peace and war. He holds a PhD in peace education and has worked with the United Nations in this field.
Dr Page has been a member of the Australian Democrats for many years. He believes that the Democrats have been a significant voice of conscience within the Australian parliament and within Australian society for the past 30 years and that it is important to keep this voice.
“What makes the Democrats unique is that the party gains support from both the left and right of politics, and this means that the Democrats hold a unique position in Australian politics. Without the Democrats, both the parliament and Australian society will be impoverished.”
Issues of particular concern to Jim include:
- Climate change
- Alternative energy
- Housing affordability
- Integrity in government
- National Debt
- War in Iraq
- Military expenditure
- Unfair industrial relations laws
- Underfunding of Australian research
- Health funding
- Education funding
- Indigenous rights
Dr Page’s most recent essay can be found online. It is titled, “Australian Democrats and the Politics of Peace“
